Introduction Mount Vesuvius and its historical importance in the the modern age.
Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano volcano (composed of many layers) that is located in the Gulf of Naples, Italy. The Volcano itself is famous for its destruction of roman cities Herculaneum and Pompeii in the 79 A.D eruption. The event is significant and its importance as a historical and ancient source of information concerning roman culture and society is essential as it was through the Eruption s in 79 A.D that destroyed and more importantly preserved both ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Discoveries at Pompeii and Herculaneum are so significant as they show insight about roman life that are not found anywhere else in the modern world. It is estimated that over 16,000 civilians were killed during the eruption and the only surviving account of the events that consumed these cities are two letters written by Pliny the Younger to a friend Tacitus. These detailed accounts reveal the horror of such an event and is the only insight the modern age has to what really happened in 79 A.D.
